LAWMAKERS REVIEW HUSTLER FUND AND UWEZO FUND OPERATIONS AMID CALLS FOR REFORM
The Parliamentary Special Funds Accounts Committee today held a high-level stakeholder engagement with its clients: The Financial Inclusion Fund and Uwezo Fund, aimed at recognizing and evaluating the impact of the two funds in uplifting Kenyans at the bottom of the economic pyramid.
The session was led by Chairperson Hon. Mohammed Fatuma Zinab, who guided Members of Parliament through the engagement. In her opening remarks, Hon. Fatuma underscored the Committee’s core mandate of oversight and advisory, emphasizing its role in ensuring accountability and effectiveness in the management of special funds.
Principal Secretary Susan Mangeni provided a comprehensive overview of both the Hustler Fund and Uwezo Fund. Her presentation highlighted key areas, including the background of the funds, the introduction of a national credit scoring framework, efforts to promote a savings culture, and initiatives aimed at nurturing and rehabilitating beneficiaries. She also addressed the challenges currently facing the two funds.
Hustler Fund CEO Henry Tanui shared the latest performance metrics, including disbursement figures, repayment rates, and ongoing recovery strategies that are strengthening the fund’s sustainability.
Also in attendance were Committee Vice Chair Hon. Abdul Dawood and Uwezo Fund CEO Peter Lengapiani, among other leaders.
